Llegaron de noche, con el cansancio del camino encima. Daniel Meza y Rubén Hernández cruzaron medio país para llegar a Playa Azul, en Manzanillo, Colima, sede del VII Campeonato Nacional de Pesca de Playa 2026. El viaje no fue corto ni fácil. Hubo retrasos, esperas y kilómetros de más. Lo que no se movió fue el objetivo: representar a Baja California Sur en el clasificatorio nacional rumbo al Panamericano.

They arrived at night, the road still on their backs. Daniel Meza and Rubén Hernández crossed half the country to reach Playa Azul, in Manzanillo, Colima, host of the 7th National Beach Fishing Championship 2026. The trip was neither short nor smooth. There were delays, long waits, extra miles. What never shifted was the goal: to represent Baja California Sur in the national qualifier on the road to the Pan-American.

La arena habló primero

The sand spoke first

El sábado es la competencia. El viernes fue para leer la playa. En la pesca de playa nada se improvisa: hay que entender el oleaje, encontrar el canal, medir la corriente y elegir el señuelo correcto antes de que suene el disparo de salida. Daniel y Rubén dedicaron la práctica a eso, a estudiar Playa Azul metro por metro.

Saturday is the competition. Friday was for reading the beach. In beach fishing nothing is left to chance: you learn the surf, find the channel, gauge the current and pick the right lure before the start signal. Daniel and Rubén spent the practice doing exactly that, studying Playa Azul meter by meter.

La arena respondió. Cayeron barrilete, toro y palometa, las tres especies que mandan en esta costa del Pacífico. No cuentan para el marcador todavía, pero confirman lo que un competidor necesita saber la víspera: dónde están los peces y con qué quieren morder. Cada captura se midió, se pesó con la mirada y volvió al agua. Así se compite aquí, y así se cuida el recurso.

The sand answered. Skipjack, jack crevalle and pompano came in, the three species that rule this stretch of the Pacific. They do not count toward the score yet, but they confirm what a competitor needs to know the night before: where the fish hold and what they want. Every catch was measured, weighed by eye and returned to the water. That is how you compete here, and how you protect the resource.

No llegan en blanco. Los dos cargan un historial de podios internacionales que habla por ellos. Daniel viene de subir al podio panamericano de surf fishing en Costa Rica; Rubén defendió los colores del estado en el Panamericano de kayak de mar en La Paz. La experiencia se nota en la calma con la que arman el equipo y eligen el punto.

They do not arrive empty-handed. Both carry a record of international podiums that speaks for itself. Daniel comes off the Pan-American surf-fishing podium in Costa Rica; Rubén defended the state's colors at the Pan-American saltwater-kayak championship in La Paz. The experience shows in the calm with which they rig up and choose their spot.

Un campeonato así no se gana solo en la arena. Detrás hay quienes apuestan por el deporte sudcaliforniano. La Asociación agradece a FONMAR y, de manera muy especial, al Lic. Martín Insunza Tamayo, por el apoyo que hizo posible que dos pescadores de Baja California Sur estén hoy en Playa Azul. Su respaldo se traduce en algo concreto: representación, oportunidad y orgullo para el estado.

A championship like this is not won on the sand alone. Behind it stand those who bet on Sudcaliforniano sport. The Association thanks FONMAR and, most especially, Lic. Martín Insunza Tamayo, for the support that made it possible for two Baja California Sur anglers to stand in Playa Azul today. That backing becomes something concrete: representation, opportunity and pride for the state.
